Historic Nags Head was established in the 1830s and was the first seaside resort in North Carolina. Later in the 1880s families traveled by horse-drawn carriage over a wooden boardwalk to swim in the Ocean. Homes reflecting the Victorian style popular at the time are now known as the Unpainted Aristocracy were constructed on the oceanfront, defining the classic Nags Head style of architecture. History buffs, birdwatchers and nature lovers enjoy exploring Roanoke Island nearby and the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. There's also surfing, shipwreck diving, kite boarding, hang gliding, and other water sports. By First Colony Inn.

Since the early 1800s, because of its innate beauty, Nag's Head became a favorite destination of those who like to spend their holiday in utter peace and quiet. Jockey's Ridge, the largest sand dune on the eastern seaboard, is found in Nag's Head and in that dune you will see a castle and the already buried Old Nag's Head Hotel. The area surrounding Jockey's Ridge is frequented by adventurers who love hang gliding, sand gliding and those kite flying. For those who like to swim, there is a beach on the other side of Jockey's Ridge which is on the Roanoke Sound. While in town, you can stay at any of the Nag's Head bed and breakfast inns.
