With a population of around 900 this prairie town is surrounded by grain fields & ranch land with forested mountains all around. Visit in May and June when brilliant yellow canola in bloom contrasts with deep green wheat fields. Or come in mid-August to early September to see harvest in process. The Salmon, Snake & Clearwater Rivers are in close proximity offering spectacular fishing, river rafting, scenery & solitude. Just outside town is a century-old monastery that still is in operation which draws visitors year-round to the Historical Museum of St. Gertrude. Cottonwood is located in Nez Perce Indian country with opportunities to visit museums, cultural & historical sites. The Lewis & Clark Corps of Discovery traversed the countryside around Cottonwood spending several weeks with the Nez Perce people on both legs of their trip.
