Description

Circa 1870. When the owners of this guest ranch bill their place as "luxury at the edge of the wilderness," it isn't just a snappy slogan, it's true. If a half million acres of wilderness and stunning views of snow capped mountain peaks don't entice you, the historic lodge's interior should. Picture polished exposed beams and wood-paneled or log walls, a mix of Victorian and country French furnishings and just enough antlers to create that rustic, lodge atmosphere. Each guest room includes a stone fireplace. There is also an assortment of cabins to consider, some more than a century old. The cabins include a living room, stone fireplace, kitchen and a private porch or deck. There is a full-service, fine-dining restaurant and a tavern often hosting live musical groups from nearby Durango. Now an Orvis endorsed fly-fishing lodge, the inn offers fly fishing in ponds, rivers and lakes. The San Juan River is rated third in the nation for fine fly fishing. (Fly-tying clinics and instruction are offered and there's a fly-fishing lodge.) Other activities include hay rides, mountain biking, dog sled rides, snowshoeing, sleigh rides and watersports. Horseback and trail riding, of course, are a major part of the fun. The ranch offers a full children's program with many interesting activities. As is typical of dude ranches, rates are quoted for weekly visits.
