Circa 1730. During the 1978 restoration of this inn, an archeological dig made an interesting discovery. Before 1733, the site was a tannery operated by the Shoemaker of Chestertown. His one-room dwelling is now a converted guest room. After additions to the building, it became a tavern in 1793 and was described as "situated in the center of business...with every attention given to render comfort and pleasure to such as favor it with their patronage."
