Circa 1854. It’s difficult to believe that this graceful three-story Victorian ever featured shag carpeting and linoleum floors. Hardly a fitting ending for a home that once belonged to a Confederate ship-builder and blockade runner, who burned his shipyard rather than let Union soldiers capture it. Innkeepers Charles Pennington and Dennis Madsen transformed Verandas from an ill-decorated, fire-damaged wreck into an elegant bed & breakfast. The restoration process included two years of painstaking work. For their efforts, they have been awarded a historic preservation award from the Historic Wilmington Foundation. The romantic guest rooms are filled with American, French and English antiques. Most rooms include a fireplace, and the beds are topped with luxurious, hand-ironed linens. Bathrooms now feature oversized tubs and marble floors and vanities. Gourmet coffees and teas accompany the lavish breakfasts, which feature delectable entrees such as a croissant stuffed with smoked salmon and cream cheese and baked in an egg custard. There are many amenities for business travelers, including wireless Internet, fax service and corporate midweek rates.

Innkeeper Note

Thank you for taking the time and interest to learn more about The Verandas, located on a very quiet street in the heart of downtown Historic Wilmington. We have been a AAA Four Diamond property for six years, a member of the exclusive Select Registry for seven years, and have had more than 19,000 guests stay with us in the 11 years we have been open. We have a big return guest percentage. After restoring this mansion, a two-year adventure, we have been so pleased with the results, and have enjoyed sharing the house with guests. There are four verandas and a terrace. The first floor of the house is exclusively for guests. We are function free. While the house and furnishings are antiques and eclectic, our style of innkeeping is warm and friendly. We enjoy visiting with our guests but try to respect their privacy at the same time. We hope they enjoy the Inn. We are not a museum, but a property in which to relax, make new friends, and have fun. Complimentary beverages, snacks, sodas, beer, etc., are all included. Wine is served at 5 pm. We serve a full gourmet breakfast in the morning with French Pressed coffee, tea, choice of juice, fruit course, and main entree with breakfast meat to the side. Our full breakfast is served in a formal dining room under a crystal chandelier on antique china and silverware. We would love to have you stay with us, and be given the opportunity to spoil you. If you decide not to stay at The Verandas, we hope you enjoy our wonderful historic city, it's beaches and it's 55 attractions. Have a great day!
