Circa 1829. Dr. John Russell and his son-in-law, Colonel Cooper, modeled a simple brick Federal house into a unique Victorian. Its sister structure is the Wedding Cake House of Kennebunk, Maine. There is a hand-painted plaster ceiling in the ballroom and a collection of Civil War items and antique medical devices. Woodwork is of cherry, maple and walnut, and there are etched and stained-glass windows. Hal Holbrook called the town "America's Hometown."

About Our Rooms

The Rose Room

The Rose RoomAs the name denotes, there are several items featuring roses in this room. From lamps, bedding, pictures, right down to the paint on the textured walls, roses can be found abundantly in the decor. This room also features a Queen size bed for your sleeping comfort.

The Colonels Room

The Colonels RoomThis is the Colonel's room, named after Col. Wm. C. Cooper. There are several of the colonel's personal effects that are kept in this room; including civil war documents. One of the highlights of this room is Colonel Cooper's hand carved double bed. There is also a single, four poster bed for an extra guest if so desired.

English Country

Queen & Single

The Oriental Room

The Oriental RoomThe oriental room now features a Queen size bed and a single four poster bed for an additional guest. This room is decorated with a variety of authentic Japanese and Thai momentos. Victorian era vacations often included a trip to the orient. You will find several authentic oriental items to give you the feeling of being an era vacationer to the Orient. This room also provides the best view of our beautiful garden area.

The French Country Room

The French Country RoomThe French Country room is one of the most popular rooms. It is decorated in a blue and white French country theme. There is a four poster double bed and a single bed that occupy this room, accentuated by several pieces of pottery and pictures. Of special interest in this room is the original beam work of the house. These were put together using dowels instead of nails. If you look, you may find some of the bark still on them.

The Garden Room

The Garden RoomThe garden room features queen size brass bed. The room is decorated with flowers, lace items and has several antique trunks. Relax in the peaceful feeling of being in a Garden of Eden
