Romantic Interest

For over two and a half centuries Middleton Place has welcomed and enchanted visitors from all over the world. The 65 acres of landscaped terraces, shadowy allees, ornamental ponds and garden rooms laid out with precise symmetry and balance made Middleton Place the most unique and grand garden of its time. Today, as they did then, the gardens represent the Low Country's most spectacular expression of an 18th-century ideal — the triumphant marriage between man and nature.

Describe Garden and Grounds

America's Oldest Landscaped Gardens The Gardens at Middleton Place, which Henry Middleton envisioned and began to create in 1741, reflect the grand classic style that remained in vogue in Europe and England into the early part of the 18th century. Following the principles of André Le Nôtre, the master of architectural garden design who laid out the gardens at the Palace of Versailles, great attention was paid to woods and water. Rational order, geometry and balance; vistas, focal points and surprises were all part of this garden design. Henry Middleton's original gardens contained walkways, or allées, which were planted with trees and shrubs, trimmed to appear as green walls that partition off small galleries, green arbors and bowling greens. There were ornamental canals designed with mathematical precision, sundials, minor vistas and statues placed at strategic viewpoints. Grassy ramps were preferred to steps; the gentle slopes were more imperceptible transitions and were more pleasing to the eye and more convenient for walking. The situation of the main house and the fall of the land suited Henry's purpose ideally. Extended vistas in the Carolina Low Country were usually flat, across great expanses of river and marsh. The house site at Middleton Place was an exception. It stood on high land a quarter of a mile above the river which flowed around the bluff, turning and forming a wide canal directly in line with the house. Henry Middleton's appraising eye appreciated the incomparable view of the river. Geometry and Symmetry Were The Rule Henry Middleton's garden design was a superb exercise in logic and geometry, perfectly adapted to the contours of the land. He engaged an English gardener, probably one who was working in Charleston, to help him lay out what historian Samuel Gaillard Stoney called,

Story book fairy tale!

Words can not describe how breath taking this property is. The gardens are huge and so peaceful to stroll through. The restaurant is better than any I have eaten at downtown!! Reception and horseback riding were fun too!! Can't wait to return!!

In Dire Need of Updates

I stayed for three nights with two friends. The grounds were beautiful but the rooms had a lot to be desired. Our deadbolt on the door had no bolt in it at all...??? The floor was gritty. The two twin beds were very uncomfortable. The rollaway had springs sticking up through the thin covering of the old mattress. The water in the faucets smelled of sewer...???? For 200 a night, I expected much more... I would not go back nor would I recommend it. I understand the concept of being "old" but that doesn't mean it has to be dirty, uncomfortable and unsafe.

Management Response
I’m sorry you did not find The Inn at Middleton Place suitable to your expectations. The rate per night is an outstanding value with admission to Middleton Place included (a $86 value per couple, per day), as well as a Healthy Start Breakfast and evening reception. I hope you took your concerns to management while you were here, any oversights on our part would have been handled quickly and efficiently. We certainly wish you all the best.

In dire need of maintenance

My wife and I stayed at this inn for our 3rd anniversary and to be direct we were greatly disappointed. The bathroom fixtures were old and cankered and soap scum was abuntant. None of the fixtures sparkled because of the film. The floor was dull and looked as if it had not been treated properly in years. The windows were absolutely filthy and we resigned to just not look out of them because it was so disgusting. In addition the parking lot is not paved so forget about rolling your luggage. The food was ok, but nothing to speak favorably of by any means. This place probably was spectacular in its day but the immages on the website will fool you and you will truly feel like a bo-bo if you don't find other lodging.

ROMANTIC!

History, eco-sensitive, real people and nature. Add in a wood burning fireplace, 150 gallon tub and plush linens and that equals ROMANTIC!

Secluded Romantic Get-away

I had the most romantic weekend at The Inn at Middleton Place, recently. The room is perfect for couples of any age, especially if you love the outdoors. There was a fireplace in our room with a sofa for us to snuggle on and drink some wine. The bed was very roomy and comfortable and it was incredible waking up to the sunrise along the Ashley River! We took several short hikes around the property and over to the plantation. We even spent some time napping together in one of several hammocks around the grounds. The staff at the evening reception was very friendly and helped us decide what to do while off property (although we never wanted to leave)! I can't wait to come back and stay here again!!!

Romantic Anniversary Getaway!

My husband and I love to spend our anniversaries at Middleton Place and this past anniversary was no exception. We walked throughout the gardens and the property, enjoyed the cocktail reception, dinner at the wonderful Middleton restaurant, the gorgeous room (with the best tubs you'll find), the views, everything! We rode bikes throughout the property before we checked out and saw some of the most beautiful wildlife you can imagine. The rooms, service, grounds and food are all spectacular!

Romantic for sure!!

I am READY TO GO BACK to the Inn at Middleton Place, and I literally just checked out two days ago! From the fireplaces in the room, to the "wine-n-cheese" reception, to the quiet walks and pathways, to the corner table in the restaurant, this venue deserves to be MOST ROMANTIC!

ROMANTIC

I just spent the weekend at The Inn at Middleton Place with my boyfriend who is now going to be my future husband! He and the Innkeeper, Abby Martin, set up a surprise where her staff brought me breakfast in bed, with the ring under the plate cover! It was the most fantastic beginning to our lives together and I owe this property and the staff this recognition!

Hidden Getaway

This is where I go when I need a quick escape from my everyday workload. I LOVE the 150 gallon tubs. I sit and soak in there for hours. Make sure you met the "house cat" ZOE, she has a personality of her own. Best customer service in town.
