Circa 1762. An outstanding example of Georgian and Greek architecture, this landmark townhouse sits in the center of the Historic District. Six men who signed the Declaration of Independence stayed here, and countless slaves were smuggled through the cellar's Underground Railroad tunnel. The spacious foyer features dark walnut and pine plank floors, rare in this region. Original ornate gilded rosette moldings still crown the living and dining rooms, highlighting the imported Austrian crystal chandeliers and marble fireplaces. Oriental rugs, paintings, sculptures, tapestries and antiques furnish the inn with luxury and elegance. Guest bedrooms are sure to pamper with chocolates, hot air-jet whirlpool tubs, robes and slippers, heated marble floors and towel warmers. The third-floor sundeck, Koi pond, garden and patio offer tranquil privacy. Recommended by Conde' Nast Johansens.
