Circa 1780. This white clapboard inn, shaded by tall elms, was built by Hessian soldiers who were prisoners during the Revolutionary War. Before its present life as a country inn, Silver Thatch was a boys' school, a melon farm and a tobacco plantation. Many additions have been made to the original house. The original 1780 section is now called the Hessian Room. The inn is filled with antiques. There are three intimate dining rooms featuring contemporary cuisine.
