Kekaha was formerly housing for the old sugar plantation, but now is a bedroom community three miles from Waimea Town on the banks of the Waimea River. The ruins of old Russian Fort Elizabeth guard the river mouth, which is where Captain Cook first landed in Hawaii in 1776. A bronze statue, a gift from Cook's home town of Whitby, England commemorates that event. Waimea and Kekaha are at the foot of Waimea Canyon, which Mark Twain called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. At the top of the extinct volcano above the canyon is Kokee State Park (Google it!), which is one of the last endemic Hawaiian rain forests. Explore the Natural History Museum there, or the forty miles of hiking trails. Some trails go down into the canyon, while others go out onto knife-edge ridges 4,000 feet above the wild and scenic Na Pali Coast. One descends into a high- altitude swamp in a volcanic crater. The forest is home to plants and animals, especially birds, that exist nowhere else on earth.
