Also known as the City of Hills, Oneonta is a city in southern Otsego County, New York. Oneonta means place of open rocks according to the Iroquois language and this refers to a geological formation called "tablerocks" found at the western end of the city. Oneonta is the home to the State University of New York and Hartwick College. It's accessible by air via the Oneonta Airport which is just north of the city. Rich with Native American culture, the area was inhabited by the Algonquin and the Iroquois Indians but the Iroquois gained exclusive control during the early historic period. Breathtaking views are seen from the foot of the Catskill Mountains, lying between Binghamton and Albany. There are noteworthy historic buildings still present in Oneonta which includes the Fairchild Mansion which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
