Filled with colleges and many historic homes and other historic buildings, the colonial town of Carlisle was founded in 1751 as the seat of Cumberland County. One historic feature of Carlisle is that it was shelled by General J.E.B. Stuart. Carlisle is the home of Dickinson College, Penn State Dickinson School of Law, the US Army War College, and the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet. By Carlisle House.

Carlisle was founded in 1751. Named for Carlisle, England, it was a frontier town which played a significant role in the country's history. Visited by such notables as George Washington and Ben Franklin, it is the home of the Carlisle Barracks and Army War College, the home of Penn State's Dickinson School of Law, and of Dickinson College, the first college to be founded in the United States. Many historians believe that if Colonel J.E.B. Stuart had been where he was ordered to be, instead of here shelling Carlisle, the Battle of Gettysburg may never have happened, or at least resulted differently. By Carlisle House.

Carlisle is a history buff's dream. Stroll through the historic district and you can feel the history that comes from Colonial and Victorian era homes. Walk the footsteps of George Washington as he reviewed militia as part of The Whiskey Rebellion in 1794. Visit the gravesite of Revolutionary War heroine Molly Pitcher or the site of the Carlisle Indian School, where Olympic athlete Jim Thorpe once studied. By Pheasant Field B&B.
