Lime Kiln was the first name of Lemon Cove. This was because of the lime deposits found in the area in 1859. Back then this was Indian Territory. After the flood in 1868, a novel idea came to be. James William Center (J.W.C.) Pogue and his family planted oranges and lemons in Dry Creek. Many thought this was impossible since lemons were considered tropical, incompatible with San Joaquin Valley's climate. The Pogue's proved their detractors wrong. Soon he and his family had a robust orange and lemon orchard. J.W.C. Pogue was a pioneer and he developed the town of Lemon Cove. Little has changed since then; Lemon Cove has remained a rural and bucolic town. The two story Pogue Hotel is still standing.
