Description

Circa 1907. At Ironhorse Inn, history meets hospitality, a short stroll away from the shops and restaurants in the “Best Small Town in Texas.” A 400-year-old oak tree stands sentry over the carefully renovated and restored bed and breakfast that celebrated a grand reopening in 2013. Surrounded by a fence from the late 1800s, the inn boasts original maple and pine floors, and many of the original windows. Two suites and four guest rooms have private bathrooms and include afternoon snacks and a full gourmet breakfast each morning. Natural light fills the sunroom separated from the bedroom by lavish curtains in Josephine’s Suite. A royal purple door leads to Philippa’s Balcony with a king-size bed and private balcony over the front porch. Anchored by the Hood County Courthouse, the precisely preserved town square has the honor of being the first in Texas to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Describe Garden and Grounds

Mr. Cogdell's property was surrounded by pecan trees back in the 1800's. We currently have 11 pecan trees on the property and numerous oaks including one live oak that is over 400 years old.

Josephines Suite

Josephine's Suite is named for the youngest Cogdell daughter and mother of Philippa. This two-room suite is over-the-top with luxury. The massive king bed is adorned with Vera Wang linens and beautiful draperies divide the bedroom from the sitting room solarium. The solarium is walled with 15 windows and sits in the tops of the oak and pecan trees. Guests can relax on the beautiful sofas and watch TV, read a book or just enjoy nature.

Rates: $195 - $225

Cogdell Suite

Daniel C. Cogdell commissioned this exquisite Arts and Crafts home built when the original 22-room, three-story Victorian burned to the ground in 1905. The Cogdell Suite is located on the first floor of the house and is a huge master suite with a sitting room solarium of 15 windows.

Rates: $195 - $225

Bluebonnet Room

Tucked away in the eaves is the cozy Bluebonnet Room. A queen-size iron bed, make-up vanity, writing desk, TV and a lounge chair to relax in make this the perfect hide-away for 1 or 2 guests.

Rates: $115 - $145

Chisholm Trail Room

The McBride's previously owned a bed and breakfast in Abilene, Kansas--the end of the Chisholm Trail. The Iron Horse Inn is located near the beginning of the Chisholm Trail. Relax in this luxury king-size room with an extra large bath.

Rates: $155 - $185

Phillippas Balcony

Philippa's Balcony is named for Philippa Schuyler, Harlem's biracial child prodigy and the Cogdell granddaughter who was never known to her grandparents. The large luxury room is located at the front of the house with a balcony over the front porch. A beautifully appointed king bed, and a sofa and chair adorn the room.

Rates: $155 - $185

Sunflower Room

The McBride's bring their Kansas roots to this bright room. The king-size bed offers a view of the back yard and the biggest 400-year-old live oak on the property.

Historic Interest

The Cogdell house was designed by Mr. Cogdell's friend, Wyatt Hedrick. Wyatt was a famous architect and the Will Rogers Coliseum, the Texas Hotel and the Shamrock Hilton in Houston are just a few of the designs to his credits. It took three master cabinetmakers to build this fifteen room home. The home has its original maple floors downstairs, along with the original loblolly pine floors upstairs. The home has most of its original windows. Built in the house were two bathrooms with custom made 7 foot claw foot tubs which are still on the property in the cottages. Central heat from a coal furnace was part of the original plans for the Cogdell house, and it was piped up from the limestone basement. The 1885 fence that surrounds most of the property is still present, as is the original storm cellar.
