Inkeepers Notes

Centrally located in the historic Beacon Hill neighborhood, The Charles Street Inn is Boston's most romantic hotel! Each of our nine rooms feature a working marble fireplace, antique furniture, original ceiling medallions and cornices, original artwork, and a private bath with Jacuzzi bathtub. Our rooms are named after luminaries from Boston's Victorian, are decorated in the spirit of their namsakes, and hold literature and portraits of them. All rooms have rooftop or garden views, with luxury cherry wood and white Italian tile bathrooms that include large whirlpool spa tubs and Kohler showers, kitchenettes with sub-zero mini bars, coffeemakers, Frette linens including robes and slippers and Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries. There are high-speed Internet access lines in each room, two phone lines with fax, Bose Wave AM/FM radio with CD player, cable stereo television with VCR, free use of video, CD and book library and safes. With elevator access to all rooms, the Charles Street Inn graciously accommodates those with disabilties. Owners Sally Deane and Louise Venden provide warm and attentive service, a deluxe continental breakfast served in your room and helpful advice regarding local sites, shopping, tours and events.

Room Detail

Henry James

Romantic antique gold, vermillion, and regal purple hues. High ceiling with plaster medallion, like the bedroom of a prince. Gold gilt mirror over black and gold clock and a grand hand-painted King canopy bed. A luxurious European room for Henry James, the cosmopolitan author of "The Bostonians". The room comes complete with a large, spa-quality bathroom.

Isabella Stewart Gardner

Lush terra cotta, peach, and rose reds cradle the sculpted Italianete walnut armoires, and the bright bay window overlooking beautiful Charles Street. A plush fainting couch, a dramatic hand-carved Irish mirror, and an original brass Rococo chandelier (made when your grandfather's grandfather was still a child). A gracefully carved baroque marble fireplace makes this a room Isabella Stewart Gardener would enjoy. The room comes complete with a large, spa-quality bathroom.

Fredrick Law Olmsted

High walls graced by peaceful antique sepia landscape etchings and lithographs and a gold-gilt mirror on the mantle. Lace canopy on a cherry-wood bed so tall that it has steps, is joined by white marble furnishings: fireplace, desk, bureau, and tables. Burled cherry French armoires are complemented by a carved walnut sofa. A large fern, fresh flowers and a view of Mt. Vernon Square Garden recall Olmsted's fondness for nature. The room comes complete with a large, spa-quality bathroom.

Julia Ward Howe

Windows overlooking Charles Street and Beacon Hill. An old gold and burgundy palette framed by a lovely oil painting of a thorough-bred horse. A Queen mahogany canopy bed trimmed in Royal Medallion fabric beside a maroon velvet couch and sword chair. It reminds one of the parlors in an English estate with hunting dogs and worn leather saddles. The room comes complete with a large, spa-quality bathroom.

John Singer Sargent

Blue and cream like a China cup. Two Double beds, an elegant writing desk, Austrian walnut armoires, and a white Marble fireplace. Soft beds and tree-green light from the windows of a quiet afternoon. As strong, yet comfortable as your favorite John Singer Sergeant painting. The room comes complete with a large, spa-quality bathroom.

Edith Wharton

Bowfront window with elegant settee overlooking Charles Street. Classic simplicity in French blue and gold, Queen bed and matching handcarved French armoires.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Original chestnut wainscoting and a garden view for this room accessible to any and all. Nature and golf art plus a portrait of Napoleon on horseback. Italian rose marble fireplace and pink marble coffee table offset the gold and black trim on the Biedemeier sofa, the black marble writing desk, and the velvet Gothic tester on the bed. The room comes complete with a large, spa-quality bathroom.

Oliver Wendell Holmes

A walnut roll-top desk with trim for a ship's captain and a seashore painting above the hearth. Spacious French and Danish antique armoires and a walnut sleigh bed. A tree-top view of Mount Vernon Square garden for a great, quiet room. The room comes complete with a large, spa-quality bathroom.

Louisa May Alcott

View rooftops of Beacon Hill in the morning sun! Antique Danish pine furnishings and a comfortable settee - Reminiscent of Louisa May Alcott's home in Concord. A queen bed with celery green and deep rose palette, like a garden in May. The room comes complete with a large, spa-quality bathroom.
