About 13 miles southeast of Utica, New York is a village called Herkimer and it is one of the most interesting towns to visit. Herkimer got its name from the Palatine German immigrants - the Herkimers who lived and settled in this very spot in 172. And the peculiar thing about the whole setup is that the citizens are served by three political entities of the same name: the county of Herkimer, the town of Herkimer, and the village of Herkimer. This quaint town is rich with historical artifacts from as far back as the French and Indian War in 1757. And combined with its historical heritage, Herkimer is one of the best towns to spend your vacation at with miles of hiking areas on the opposite side of the shore with the Plantation Island Wildlife Management Area.
