In Kaua'i County is a unique place called Hanalei. Hanalei means lei making in the Hawaiian language. The name Hanalei also means crescent bay and may be named after the shape of the Hanalei Bay, formed like a crescent. Hanalei is located near the mouth of the Hanalei River on the north shore of the island of Kauai. Hanalei was put into the limelight when it was used as the backdrop of several films such as the 1958 musical film titled South Pacific.
