Harbor House

Sitting proudly on the banks of the Sampit River, this impressive three-story Georgian house with distinctive red roof has been a welcoming beacon of hospitality for almost two-and-a-half centuries. Winyah Bay’s blue waters and the ocean beyond are easily seen from this immaculately restored B&B. Original Colonial moldings, heart pine floors and eight fireplaces reside with early American antiques, family heirlooms and Oriental rugs. Guest bedrooms include a choice of a four-poster rice, pencil-post or sleigh bed. Served in the formal dining room, a Southern-style breakfast may include low country shrimp and grits, fresh melon, ham biscuits, sweet potato pancakes with bananas and rum, bacon and baked apples. Enjoy hors d’oeuvres in the parlor or while rocking riverside on the front porch.

Mansfield Plantation B&B Country Inn

Listed in the National Register, and featured in Mel Gibson's movie, The Patriot, Mansfield Plantation is a perfect respite for those in search of romance and history in a natural, secluded setting. The large dining room and sitting rooms are furnished with the owner's collections of 19th-century American antiques that include paintings, china, silver, furniture and gilt-framed mirrors. Accommodations include three guesthouses, each decorated in a romantic style and boasting fireplaces, hardwood floors, high ceilings, comfortable furnishings and collectibles. The vast grounds (900 private acres), shaded by moss-draped oaks, provide ideal spots for relaxing. Enjoy azalea and camellia gardens, as well as views of the surrounding marshlands. Guests can relax in hammocks or swings, watch for birds or enjoy a bike ride. Boating on the Black River is another possibility. Guests may bring their own boats or rent canoes or kayaks nearby. Among the plantation's notable historic features are a schoolhouse, kitchen, winnowing house, slave village and chapel, all of which predate the Civil War.
