Historic Interest
Designated historic site by Talbot County Historic Preservation Commission, the George Brooks House dates back to the Civil War period and was built by freed slaves for Captain Andrew C. Barkman. Purchased in 1900 by George and Mamie Brooks, they expanded the house in 1908 when they became the guardians for 11 children when his sister died. George may have been the most prosperous black man in the area, and boasted of having the largest home of any African-American in this area. In 1936, George published a famous document on race relations where he tells his fellow blacks "to go back to work and stop grumbling and growling about the white man." Carefully restored and expanded in 2001, the George Brooks house retains important elements from the time that George built the Gothic Revival Section that faces Route 33.
