Colonel Charles Lewis, under the command of George Washington, built one of the string of forts on this property to protect the southern pass of the Shenandoah Mountains from Indian raids. It is easy to revel in the natural beauty of this 3,200-acre mountain farm. Stay in quaint lodge rooms, including "sleeping in the round," a silo with a spiral staircase. Three historic hand-hewn log cabins boast stone fireplaces. The newly restored Riverside House offers five spacious guest bedrooms. Enjoy Caryl's plentiful homemade meals served in the refurbished 19th-century grist mill. The local area features many opportunities to hike, hunt, bike and fish.
