Description

Circa 1776. Gardens and a picket fence surround the three historic buildings that comprise this gracious inn. The Federal-style main house offers many historic details, including wide-pine floors originally a part of the ship of the sea captain who built the home. Freshly baked cookies and an original wood-burning fireplace in the parlor (once the cooking fireplace) add to the inviting experience. Bed chambers are furnished in colonial antiques and reproductions and offer fluffy comforters. The dining room is the spot where the innkeepers serve an expanded continental breakfast buffet. There's a rooftop sun deck for summer tanning, a porch and patio. Enjoy whale watching, restaurants, shops, beaches and the Pilgrim Monument.

Historic Interest

The Fairbanks Inn's Captain's House was built in the 1770s by Captain Eben Snow, an English sea captain. It features the original wide plank pumpkin pine floorboards. The two sides of the Federal style Captain's House have 14 inches thick of Dutch brick brought over as ballast in Captain Snow's ship.

Cozy and Warm

Spent one week at the Fairbanks during August of 2008. The room was charming, with crisp new linens and a private bath. The rooms are small, but that fits with the period architecture and is part of the charm. You won't spend much time in your room anyway, with all the shopping, dining and people-watching you'll be doing in Provincetown. The "antique" furniture was delicate and needed to be treated cautiously. Drawer pulls were missing from both the nightstands and the dresser and had not been repaired or replaced. The breakfasts were good, with fresh baked goods each morning. The Innkeepers make their own special granola mix and it was quite tasty. When the inn is full, there is not enough seating inside for everyone, but there is a nice outside seating area in the garden. One innkeeper was very cordial and helpful - dealing with her was a pleasure. The other one doesn't seem as well-suited to the job of hostess at an inn. We observed her interacting with guests several times where she came across as confrontational and abrasive. (It won't take long for you to figure out which innkeeper is which during your stay). The overall experience at the inn would be greatly enhanced if she would work at developing skills in dealing with her guests in a more delicate manner. That was the only thing that detracted from our visit. We just tried to avoid being in the common area when she was there, which, given as busy as we were experiencing the town, wasn't hard to do! Otherwise, the inn is a wonderful place to stay. It is fairly priced for the area of town, very close to all the action of Provincetown center, but quiet once you are back on the property.
