If you want to get away from the corporate hotel box stay at the Creole Gardens. They have two old mansions and a great servants building around a lush and tropical courtyard. It makes you feel like you live in New Orleans. It is an easy walk or streetcar to anywhere in the city. I wouldn't stay anywhere else.
