Circa 1856. Built in 1856 during the height of the Gold Rush Era, this two-story Victorian was known as the "What Cheer House." Now a state historical site, it has been authentically restored by the State of California, and the state owns the hotel's antique furniture and fixtures. The hotel was listed in Sunset Magazine's February 2000 issue as one of the 24 best bed & breakfasts. No televisions or telephones intrude on the historic ambiance of the hotel's 10 guest rooms. Indoor plumbing is the only historical compromise. Each room has a half-bath, and showers are down the hall.
