The Washington House Inn

This three-story brick Victorian was built by the descendants of President Washington's brothers, John Augustine and Samuel. Carved oak mantels, spacious guest rooms, antique furnishings and refreshments served on the wraparound veranda or gazebo make the inn memorable. For business travelers, data ports are available. Harpers Ferry National Historic Park, Antietam, and the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers are all within a 15-minute drive. Thoroughbred racing, slot machines and car racing are some of the popular area attractions.

Hillbrook Inn

This graceful English Tudor inn meanders down the hillside overlooking a pond framed by daffodils and 18 acres of estate grounds that include streams, gardens and wooded walks. The land once belonged to George Washington, and although most of the current structure was built in 1920, part began in the 1700s. Decorated in a European country-house style, the inn is replete with rich dark woods and interesting pieces that demand a lengthy stay to fully enjoy. The inn is often the location for elegant events and is known for its seven-course, prix-fixe candlelight dinners served at 8 p.m. Dinners are $75 per person and include house wines. The innkeepers do not accept single-night reservations without dinner.

Gilbert House B&B of Middleway

A magnificent graystone of early Georgian design, the Gilbert House is located in one of the state's oldest European settlements. Elegant appointments include fine Oriental rugs, tasteful art and antique furnishings. During restoration, graffiti found on the upstairs bedroom walls included an 1832 drawing of the future President James Polk and a child's growth chart from the 1800s. The inn is located in the Colonial era mill village of Middleway, which contains one of the country's best collections of log houses. The village is a mill site on the original settlers' trail into Shenandoah Valley ("Philadelphia Waggon Road" on Peter Jefferson's 1755 map of Virginia). Middleway was also the site of "wizard clip" hauntings during the last decade of the 1700s. The region was home to members of "Virginia Blues," commanded by Daniel Morgan during the Revolutionary War.
