Carbondale is located in Pennsylvania in the county of Lackawanna. It is 15 miles northeast of Scranton. The founder of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, Maurice and William Wurts, were responsible for the early development of Carbondale especially during the time that coal mining was really important in the 19th century. This town is historically the site of the very first underground mine in the country. Nowadays, the Carbondale Historical Society tries to preserve that heritage by holding festivals every year in commemoration of the city's early mining days and the annual event that is set for Carbondale to remember their old days is called Pioneer Days in honor of Carbondale's tag name "The Pioneer City". While in town, stay at any of the Carbondale bed and breakfast inns and experience more local color. By Heritage House on the Park.
