Circa 1866. This Cape Cod mansion was designed with the architectural detail befitting its original owner's expensive taste. Captain William Freeman, an aristocratic shipmaster, imported the inn's ornate plaster moldings from Italy, and the floors were laid in a light and dark herringbone pattern. A commanding center staircase with a hand-carved banister leads to the inn's luxurious guest rooms, all decorated with period reproductions. Many of the rooms offer fireplaces, balconies and whirlpool tubs. Guests are invited to swim in the inn's pool surrounded by flower and herb gardens or play croquet and badminton on more than an acre of sweeping lawns. The inn offers a full breakfast served poolside in the warmer months or fireside in the dining room. Tea or hot chocolate is offered on cool days in the fall and spring. Walk to the beach on Cape Cod Bay or borrow a bicycle and explore the miles of bike paths. Tennis, golf, horseback riding, theater, antiquing, art galleries and shopping are located nearby.
