Innkeeper Note

Lucy Lewand is a rarity among American innkeepers in several ways – she’s a second-generation owner in the family business of innkeeping, as an MBA from UCLA Anderson School of Business in Entrepreneurship and Information Systems and has been innkeeping for more then 20 years. After graduating from the Anderson School of Business, Lucy traveled extensively through Europe, North America, Australia and Mexico getting her first taste of the hospitality industry as a consumer. She then worked in information systems in the Los Angeles area for five years. This was followed by a move to Arizona where she opened her own business as an antique dealer. She went to auctioneering school and ran antique and charity auctions. Her parents, Del & Ray Lewand, had in the meantime purchased a historic property as one of the very first inns in Healdsburg. After visiting the area and the inn, Lucy and her parents decided that she could use her entrepreneurship skills to assist them in running the bed-and-breakfast inn as a business. She joined her parents in the business in 1987. In 1988, the Lewands opened and ran a bed and breakfast inn in La Penita de Jaltemba, Mexico concurrently with the Camellia Inn for more than 10 years. Lucy has been an innkeeper longer than most, and her guests not only benefit from her knowledge but from the many contacts she has made in the surrounding tourism community. She is always looking for ways to improve the inn, borrowing ideas, she finds along the way. She likes things to be fresh and interesting for her guests. This has led to the creation of unique seasonal and ongoing packages including antiquing getaways, solo vacations, enrichment vacations and spa packages at the inn. The Camellia Inn is one of the few family-friendly inns in the area with a special family suite and family vacation suite that Lucy has created for her guests with children. Lucy uses her management skills not only at the inn but to assist tourism organizations locally and statewide. She is currently Past Chair of the Healdsburg Chamber of Commerce Promotions Coalition, a Board Member of the Sonoma County Lodging Association and a participating member of Wine Country Inns of Sonoma County, California Lodging Industry Association, the California Association of Bed & Breakfast Inns, on the board of the Professional Association of Innkeepers International and the American Business Women’s Association. “Our goal at the Camellia Inn is to provide each guest with a comfortable and friendly experience. I have trained our staff to be experts at providing the individual attention that marks my greatest satisfaction in my life’s work,” says Lucy. In the warmly-vibrant, romantically-lit, artfully-arranged rooms throughout the inn are evidence of Lucy’s skills in constantly seeking to provide comfort for her guests with both the modern amenities important today and a clutter-free version of Victorian charm. “We want every guest who visits the Camellia Inn and the Healdsburg Wine Country to have a memorable experience,” Lucy says. “We provide them with our insider knowledge of the area and assist them make arrangements for their stay as a concierge would. I believe in being available to guests but not intrusive. Lewand is always providing her guests with extra amenities and experiences. She arranges special Friday winemaker tastings, has iPod docks in the rooms, brings in gourmet olives and there are always chocolates available. The inn is so well run by Lucy’s personally trained staff that guests are unaware of the occasional business and personal trips that take Lucy out exploring. The staff knows that when she returns there will be new ideas, new creativity and renewed energy brought to this incomparable inn.

A great place for our honeymoon

My husband and I chose the wine country for the start of our honeymoon, and could have not been more pleased with our stay at Camillia Inn. The room was very quiet, and comfortable, and the breakfasts are outstanding! Lucy and her husband are warm and inviting, and very knowledgeable about the attractions and vineyards in the area. The day we departed Lucy gave us a cookbook as a wedding gift from the local bed and breakfasts and inns in the area. I thought this was a very nice touch. Thank you Lucy for a wonderful stay. We will stay there again should we return to the wine country.

B and B=A Great Experience

In the case of this Inn, "B and B" means "Beautiful and Bountiful". The Inn is beautiful, from the inside, out. And the food and wine that is served is bountiful... and delicious. Lucy, the owner and Innkeeper, is not only very personable...but also extremely helpful and filled with good ideas as to where to eat and what to see in the region. My girlfriend and I found the Camellia Inn a great place to stay in the Sonoma Wine Country.

We fled the cold of a Minnesota January and found a warm welcome at the Camellia Inn. Lucy and Archie made us at home with wine and cheese in the evening and delicious breakfasts. They shared stories and recommended local sites, restaurants and wineries. We were upgraded to a deluxe room with a beautiful canopy bed. We loved it!

Great Location, Great Service!

Stayed 2 nights at the Camellia Inn and had a great stay. We stayed in the "budget room" which is small and has a private bathroom across the hall, but is about half the price of their other rooms. The room is cozy. The breakfasts were hearty and delicious, and a different main course each morning. They were very helpful in pointing out local wineries to visit, and also provided some free tasting certificates for wineries that would otherwise charge a fee. Lucy and Anne treated us well...they really go the extra mile. Great place to stay in Healdsburg!
