Circa 1893. This beautifully detailed three-story Queen Anne Victorian boasts two turrets and a wide veranda. From the outside, it gives the appearance of a small castle. The inn was renovated in 1995, and it retains many of the architectural details of the original house, including the paneled front hall. Victorian decor is found throughout the inn, including period antiques. The Rose Suite offers a king four-poster bed, sitting room and bath with a clawfoot tub and separate shower. Guests are treated to gourmet breakfasts. Freshly baked muffins and entrees such as eggs Florentine, rosemary and goat cheese strata and stuffed French toast are served. A second-story porch overlooks the garden with dogwood, ponds and pecan trees.

Historic Interest

Charles W. Worth was a wholesale grocery merchant, as well as a commission merchant in cotton and naval stores at the turn of the 20th century- both areas of commerce that were the mainstays of the Wilmington economy before and shortly after the War Between the States. He diversified the family business after Reconstruction by acquiring the Cape Fear Machine Works. His father, David Gaston Worth, was the only son of North Carolina Governor Jonathan Worth of Asheboro. Among notable Worth ancestors, the family tree includes Daniel Webster and Benjamin Franklin. Charles W. Worth purchased the property at 412 South Third Street in 1889. He had an existing home on the property demolished and began construction of the Queen Anne-style home in 1889. It was completed in 1893, and the Worth family resided in the home until 1930.
