Wow! The location, the room, the hosts, the food, & the hospitality are all grade "A"! We can't wait to make it back here to stay again. Meanwhile, we'll make sure all our friends & family who even mention Estes Park know about the Black Dog Inn. We loved waking up with sunlight coming in the skylight & spending the evening by the flickering fireplace. We even had elk right out the back door! Thanks for everything, our stay was wonderful.

This is the first time my wife and I stayed in Estes Park, Colorado, and I had to make reservations for this place online from Afghanistan. Needless to say, this place was everything and more described on the website. The people staying here, along with the innkeepers were very friendly and supported soldiers serving overseas. The food was great and the nights were quiet along with a great location and a wonderful cabin. This bed & breakfast is a triple combo! We will definitely be back for more!

Gala P

When we first arrived we immediately noticed that the room smelled like poop and rotten meat. Upon closer investigation we discovered that the "dog run" attached to the cottage was actually full of dog poop and bags of dog poop, strewn around the ground, and piles of trash. The tiny fenced area was actually a catchall for junk, trash, and worst of all, something somewhere that stunk of rotten meat and was attracting HUNDREDS of flies. The refrigerator didn't work, the toilet wouldn't flush, and the cottage was still 94 degrees at 10:00 at night. We had to avoid opening the doors and windows on 1 side of the cottage to try to keep the smell and flies from the junk area from coming into the cottage. After 1 night we packed our things back in the car, and I approached the owner, Sherry. I told her about the rotten smell, the dog poop, the piles of trash and junk, the out of order frig and toilet, then asked for a refund for 1 of our 3 nights. I thought this was MORE than fair, since I'd still be paying for 2 of the 3 nights I'd booked in this trash can. First Sherry repeatedly insisted that the reservation system wouldn't allow her to give me a refund on any of the nights. I finally pointed out to her that as the owner it IS within her power to give me a refund, to which she finally was forced into some honestly and said she wouldn't do it. She did offer us a different room but after that experience we weren't about to stay another minute. As a side note: I find the descriptions on their official website to be misleading. The property is described as being "snuggled amidst towering pines and aspens", but is actually adjacent to a hotel and the small backyards of some homes. As I mentioned, the dog run is actually a tiny storage area full of junk and trash, and poop, apparently. This is the kind of dishonesty I wish I would have known about before giving my money to these people. I have a very difficult time believing this many guests had 5 star experiences at this place. I smell a rat, or god knows what.

Management Response
These guests arrived 2PM, 2 hours earlier than check in. Since we had the cottage ready, we happily accomodated them and showed them their cottage. We always go with our guests to show them the features of their place. Sheree went with them inside the cottage to show and explain all the features available to them. Sheree did not notice any mal-odors, the guests did not mention any concerns about odors. They had brought their dog with them, they were shown the privacy fenced in dog run that they can let their dog out from the french doors in their room. We did have to clarify that it was just a dog run, not a personal patio to sit out in. Yes, there are flower pots on a shelf at the end of the run. The other dogs who visit have never minded the flower pots. At that time they were delighted with everything and said it was perfect. We do know that they were hoping to escape the heat wave in Kansas City. Unfortunately, we were having a heat wave here as well. They were unhappy about the weather. We cannot control the weather. We can and do provide fans, open windows to allow breezes to flow through. Carlos & Sheree were available to talk with the entire day and through the night. Nothing was ever said. We had no indication that they were unhappy until they didn't show up for breakfast the next morning. Sheree went to ask why they missed breakfast, the answer was that the husband had told his wife that there was no room in the diningroom. There was plenty of room and two settings with juice, water & fruit sitting waiting for them to come sit down and be served their main courses. At this time our guest mentioned that the dog run wasn't clean, refrigerator not working and toilet not flushing. Sheree, being concerned started to go right over to check into the problems. Our guests acted nervous and didn't want Sheree to go and check these "problems" out. Sheree went anyway. The only "mess" in the dog run were 3 baggies of dog dropping in the container from their own dog. The refrigerator was running and holding a very cold temperature. The handle of the toilet had stuck and needed jiggling. Sheree wishing our guests to be happy, offered to put them in an upgraded pet friendly cabin at no extra cost. At this time it was obvious that they were trying to think up excuses to find a way out of the reservation policy. If there had really been a problem or if they had really been disappointed upon arrival, or the first few minutes after arriving that is the time to speak up and resolve the situation. Now it seems they are on a smear campaign. They are writing to every review place with inaccurate accusations. I'm not sure what's going on in their lives to have them take their anger out on us. We do have an excellent reputation with our guests as all the other reviews reflect. She seems bent on questioning all those people's integrity who wrote good reviews. What's that saying? The whole world can't be wrong. Carlos & Sheree

I will try to keep this short, but it will be difficult for me, as there are so many wonderful things to say about the Black Dog Inn! First - My fiance is from England; when we had to push the wedding back due to visa issues, I called to let the owners know and they were the most gracious hosts about it! They told me not to worry - they would send me a voucher good for a whole year! (I should mention that we didn't find out about the postponement until mere days before the wedding.) Second - Matthew and I could not have picked a more perfect place to spend our honeymoon! The food was out of this world - amazing! The staff was wonderful. Always smiling and eager to please. They gave only good recommendations for places to eat and sights to see. We would recommend this B&B to anyone for any occasion! Without a doubt, this is the perfect get-away spot.

My husband and I stayed at the inn the week before July 4th. We had previously stayed two years ago about the time Carlos and Sherry bought the inn. The food is fabulous and plentiful, room immaculate and bed so comfortable to come home to after a long day hiking. We were made to feel very welcome. We stayed in Twin Owls and used the nicely furnished kitchen and Carlos' grill to prepare a couple of meals. The rest of the time we asked for recommendations for local restaurants. Carlos and Sherry are very knowledgable about the local chefs and the best places to eat. They were very generous to share their grill with us when we wanted to eat there. We are planning to stay again next year when we come back to hike Rocky Mtn National Park again as they are such great hosts.

We were married at the Black Dog Inn on Jan 11th. It was perfect for us! We enjoyed our stay, devoured the food, and loved the room. We had our two dogs with us, so the pet friendliness of the Inn was fantastic. Our room even had a small area for them to go outside and the Inn is in close distance to a great dog park. Everyone was extremely friendly and we are looking forward to returning again one day for a get-a-way!

Our stay at the Black Dog Inn was great. From the beautiful and romantic Olympia Cottage to the delicious and unique breakfasts that were served each morning. The special touches were most appreciated like the chocolate treats in our room and the lovely settings on the breakfast tables. After having had a peek at the Sundance Suite - we are going to make reservations for that next time for a different experience.

InnSide Tip - Eats and Shopping
We found a leather shop 'Thirty Dollars and Under'. Leather handbags, hats and wallets were some of the chiices for - yes - under thirty dollars. Also for yummy Bar-B-Q we went up the road to a great restaurent where the cornbread - green beans and ribs were delicious.

When looking for a place for my husband and I to celebrate our 5 year anniversary I had a picture, I searched and searched... when I found Black Dog Inns website I bookmarked it knowing where I wanted to stay... Our trip went beyond that picture I imagined! The rooms are far better then the pictures show, stunning! The staff is fantastic, I couldn't even explain. The smell of the breakfast, I think it can be smelt in the mountains :) The area of the B&B is gorgeous... along with the fresh fallen snow. Oh we can't wait to go back this year! Perfect Place for Wedding Ceremony!

We were recently married at the Black Dog Inn and it was a perfect place for our ceremony. We did their elopement package, which included a beautiful wildflower bouquet, one night in the honeymoon cottage and our own partially customized ceremony. Mike (our minister) and his wife Heidi were great. While Mike performed the ceremony in the backyard under a beautiful flowered arch while Heidi took some wonderful pictures. We stayed another 2 nights and the cottage was very comfortable with a nice jacuzzi. Laurie, the cook, made some tasty breakfasts, especially customized to our special diets. All in all, a wonderful experience!
