Description

Circa 1760. A magnificent graystone of early Georgian design, the Gilbert House is located in one of the state's oldest European settlements. Elegant appointments include fine Oriental rugs, tasteful art and antique furnishings. During restoration, graffiti found on the upstairs bedroom walls included an 1832 drawing of the future President James Polk and a child's growth chart from the 1800s. The inn is located in the Colonial era mill village of Middleway, which contains one of the country's best collections of log houses. The village is a mill site on the original settlers' trail into Shenandoah Valley ("Philadelphia Waggon Road" on Peter Jefferson's 1755 map of Virginia). Middleway was also the site of "wizard clip" hauntings during the last decade of the 1700s. The region was home to members of "Virginia Blues," commanded by Daniel Morgan during the Revolutionary War.

Location: 18th-century village.
