Description
Circa 1764. During the Revolutionary War, hero Ethan Allen reportedly hid out in the smoke room at this Federal-style mansion. Robert Todd Lincoln and President Taft are among the other notable guests at this historic treasure. The town's first jail cell still exists in the inn's basement, complete with steel bars and the marble slab where prisoners slept. The inn offers beautiful views of the nearby Green Mountains. Inside, guests will marvel at the inn's conservatory, which was built to resemble a ship and looks out to the gardens and the mountains. Antique-filled rooms offer four-poster or canopy beds decked in fine linens. All rooms include fireplaces and two-person whirlpool tubs. Four of the rooms include steam saunas for two. Innkeeper Chris Sprague's culinary talents, in addition to writing a cookbook, have been heralded in such publications as Food & Wine, Yankee and Colonial Homes. Vermont is bustling with activities, dozens of which are just a short drive from the inn.
