Circa 1889. This former mayor's mansion of Tudor and Romanesque design was presented with the 1997 award for Excellence in Preservation by the National Trust. The interior of this gracious home boasts 16-foot ceilings and floors patterned from three different woods. The large entrance hall features carved cornices, a coiffured ceiling and a fireplace. Every room offers something special, from Tiffany windows and beveled glass to the mansion's eight fireplaces and luxurious ballroom. The cornerstone of the Fortwood Historic District, Chattanooga's finest historic residential area, the mansion also has received the coveted City Beautiful Award.

In 1889, Edmund G. Watkins made his home on the site of a former Civil War redoubt known as Fort Wood. Watkins put his resources into rebuilding and revitalizing the economy through building projects and restoring commerce. Watkins was elected mayor of Chattanooga in recognition for the continuing rebirth of the city.
