Description

These historic homes are gracious examples of Southern elegance and charm. Manicured lawns adorn the exterior of both homes, which appear almost as a vision out of "Gone With the Wind." The Rosemary Hall boasts a spectacular heart-of-pine staircase. The homes stand as living museums, filled to the brim with beautiful furnishings and elegant decor, all highlighted by stained-glass windows, chandeliers and lacy touches. Some guest rooms include Jacuzzis, while others offer verandas. A proper afternoon tea is served each afternoon at Rosemary Hall. The Southern hospitality begins during the morning meal. The opulent gourmet fare might include baked orange-pecan English muffins served with Canadian bacon or, perhaps, a Southern strata with cheese and bacon. The catering menu is even more tasteful, and many weddings, showers and parties are hosted at these inns.

This property has been featured in Conde' Naste preferred hotel and inn, Top 10 Bed and Breakfast in South Carolina., Part of the Disney movie "That Darned Cat" (1996) was filmed at Rosemary and Lookaway Halls.

Location: City/Urban, Close to the Savannah River and the Greeneway Bike Trail.

Historic Interest

The founder of North Augusta, James Jackson, built Rosemary Hall as his home in 1902. However, his brother Walter Jackson built Lookaway Hall between 1895 and 1898 after he won the coin toss for the land with the best view. Afterwards, James Jackson was determined to build the better house and sorted through 30 truckloads of curly pine to select all of the wood panels and ceilings throughout the home as well as the grand English staircase.

Historic Awards: National Register (Granted), State Register (Granted), Local Register (Granted), State Historical Site (Granted) and City Historical Site (Granted).

Historic sites nearby: Confederate Powderworks in Augusta, close to Sherman's march through Georgia and the Carolinas.

Romantic Interest

The inns are unique, historic and charming homes appointed with beautiful antiques and china, great food and a comfortable atmosphere along with a "Gone With the Wind" style staircase. The setting and amenities provide a relaxing getaway from the everyday hustle & bustle. Soak in the tub or relax on the verandah, because after all, tomorrow is another day!
