Description
Circa 1790. Three acres surround this pristine heritage home, located on land purchased from the William Penn Land Grant. The gracious brick Georgian with its white shutters and original floors, doors, woodwork and seven fireplaces offered respite to travelers more than two centuries ago when it was called The Sign of the Green Tree. It is said that George Washington met his army on this site in 1794. You will enjoy a four-poster rice bed and whirlpool bath if you request the 1700 Suite, but each room at the inn is steeped in history and decorated in a different period. The Blue and Gray Room, combined with the old tavern-keeper's quarters, provides for a family or friends traveling together when they need two bedrooms. Breakfast is served with china, crystal and silver on white linens and may include a crepe dish or stuffed French toast and home-baked breads. Terry is a Civil War historian, a wonderful resource for enjoying the Civil War battlefields and Military History Institute nearby. There is a trout stream on the property as well as a swimmming pool, or you might enjoy a quarter of a mile walk to the 1800 Indian School.
This property has been featured in Garden of the Month, Voted Best Bed and Breakfast in the Carlisle, Shippensburg, Mechanicsburg and Perry County area, Historic Taverns of Cumberland County, HGTV "If Walls Could Talk", Taverns By The Wayside Video made for public TV and the Library of Congress.
