Description
Circa 1853. The history of this beautifully restored inn, located in Pennsylvania Dutch Country, dates back to the 18th century when it served as a hotel for weary travelers along the state's turnpike. The original inn was destroyed by fire in 1851 and a three-story hotel was built in its place with Victorian-style architecture and furnishings in a country setting. Twenty-four deluxe guest bedrooms are tastefully decorated. Suites feature a variety of options including fireplaces, sitting rooms, whirlpools and kitchens. Enjoy continental-plus breakfasts and evening snacks. Take a complimentary two-hour bus tour of the scenic area. An indoor heated pool, tennis court, fitness and game rooms, 18-hole miniature golf course and a lake are within walking distance. A farmer's market, bakery, country store, restaurant, shops and outlets are adjacent to the inn.
This property has been featured in Country Folk Art. Location: Country and Country - Historic Village Setting. Inkeepers Notes
The early tavern sign swinging in the wind showed a man with a bird perched in his hand, and the Conestoga wagoners (many of whom could drive a team of six horses a lot better than they could read) knew that they had arrived at the Bird-in-Hand Hotel. The properties that make up the Bird-in-Hand Corporation are a successor to that early coach stop and the warm hospitality that greeted weary travelers. Its beginnings date back to 1911 when Jonathan Stoltzfus, great grandfather to the current generation of Smuckers operating the businesses, bought a sixty-acre farm. For over 50 years the Smucker Family farmed the land before developing part of the family homestead into a motel. Today John & Jim Smucker, the third generation, oversee the operations of the Bird-in-Hand Corporation. The Smucker Family Homestead, located across from the Family Inn and Restaurant, has been in the family since 1911 and is farmed today by the fourth generation of Smuckers.
