Description
Circa 1885. Captain J.C. Gilchrist, owner of the largest fleet of ships on the Great Lakes, built this charming 1885 Victorian, which is listed in the National Register. From the wraparound porch, guests can relax and enjoy the view. The grounds, nestled near Lake Erie's southern shore, are surrounded by gracious old buckeye trees. Guest rooms are filled with antiques. The innkeepers transformed the second-story ballroom into a comfortable common room filled with games and a TV. The large, continental breakfasts feature sweet rolls and muffins from Vermilion's century-old family bakery. The innkeepers also offer kitchen suites for those planning longer stays. The home is only 400 feet from city docks and the beach, and a two-block walk takes guests into the downtown area with its many shops and restaurants. A maritime museum and historic lighthouse are next door.
