Circa 1878. An easy getaway from Kansas City, Lincoln or Omaha, Nebraska City's Whispering Pines offers visitors a relaxing alternative from big-city life. Fresh flowers in each bedroom greet guests at this two-story brick Italianate, furnished with Victorian and country decor. Situated on more than six acres of trees, flowers and ponds, the inn is a birdwatcher's delight. Breakfast is served formally in the dining room, or guests may opt to eat on the deck with its view of the garden and pines. The inn is within easy walking distance to Arbor Lodge, home of the founder of Arbor Day.

Nebraska City is the home of Arbor Day. Guests can take a short walk from the B&B and tour Arbor Lodge, a 52-room mansion owned by J. Sterling Morton, founder of Arbor Day. The mansion is located on a 64-acre state park. Wildwood Historic Home, built in 1869, also is open for tours. There also are several museums in town, as well.
