Inkeepers Notes

Home to Chicago lumber baron and Hamilton College trustee, Alexander Coburn Soper and his wife Mollie Eliza Pope for its first fifty years, The Inn at Tanglewood was once a Decorator Showcase House for the Old York Historical Society. Set amidst lush woodlands, colorful gardens, and whimsical fountains, it offers a quiet oasis in the heart of quaint York Harbor, a summer resort destination for generations. The Inn provides a relaxing escape with abundant activities nearby. Every twist and turn, nook and cranny of the southern Maine coast offers natural beauty and historic charm. We specialize in helping you plan each and every day of your visit with detailed maps and suggestions for your explorations and fine dining. Whether it be driving along scenic Shore Road to the Ogunquit Museum of Art, Perkins Cove, and Marginal Way just a few miles north; exploring nearby Kittery's Forts Foster and McClary in Maine’s oldest town known for shipbuilding and colonial architecture; a jaunt to Kennebunkport’s shops, Walker’s Point, the quaint fishing village of Cape Porpoise and Goose Rocks Beach; wandering historic Portsmouth’s cobblestone streets; or Portland’s Cape Elizabeth lighthouses and shores - we can individually customize your stay with us in Maine.

Room Detail

York Harbor Suite

This spaciously romantic 550 square foot York Harbor Suite is a favorite for honeymoon, anniversary, and birthday celebrations. Decorated in soft shades of mauve, teal and ecru, the suite includes a breezy private sunroom porch perched above the garden fountains, a large separate Victorian sitting parlor, and a Queen-size four-poster pencil bed in the sleeping area with a ceiling fan. The room is beautifully furnished with period antique treasures and floral hand-painted floors and walls, and has a private bath, refrigerator and gas log fireplace.

Billiard Room

Located on a sunken level of the first floor, this uniquely shaped room with five windows features its own entrance to a private sitting area on the veranda overlooking the lawns and garden woodlands. It is luxuriously furnished in rich tones of champagne, olive and claret. The windows and Queen-size sleigh bed are decorated in striped damask and jacquards exuding old world warmth and charm. The Billiard Room has a gas log fireplace, refrigerator and private bath.

The Library

Walk through double doors on the mezzanine level of the grand staircase into the essence of yesteryear. Once the library, this room offers an intimate yet spacious combination sleeping and sitting area, refrigerato and gas log fireplace. The five large windows and high ceilings are accented with intriguingly angled striped wall coverings and fabrics in shades of mocha, burgundy and teal. The Library has a Queen bed, ceiling fan and large private bath with glassed-in shower.

Cottage Suite

On the east side of the home, this suite reflects the ambiance of a seaside cottage with its painted furniture, wicker, quilts and Laura Ashley floral fabrics in soft pastels of mint and tea rose. The Cottage Suite has an antique ivory iron Queen-size bed and private bath, with an adjoining muraled sitting room that graciously expands the living space with an additional twin bed, sofa, ceiling fan and refrigerator. There is an additional charge of $25 for an extra guest in the suite.

Captain's Quarters

Reminiscent of turn-of-the-century voyages at sea, this peaceful and restful room is appointed with charcoal upon white toile wall coverings, antique inlaid mahogany furnishings and an authentic embossed oak and brass seafarer's chest. The Captain's Quarters features a Queen-size English brass bed with 'Dancing Lady' tapestry side chairs and an extended private bath with two sinks and a combination shower tub.

Garden Canopy Room

Located on the north side of the house overlooking the perennial gardens, fountains, and lovely woodlands, the Garden Canopy Room is a comforting cozy retreat. Fabrics and bed linens in shades of rust, peach and sage accent the soft butter yellow walls. Highlights include the elegantly draped raised Queen-size four-poster rice bed and the 'secret passageway' private bath with an antique oak dresser sink.
