Description
Circa 1830. Located by Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island in Southwest Harbor is a Victorian home that originated in 1830 when the first part of the house was built. Little by little, the house was added to. Eventually, the three homes had been combined into this one rambling structure, a common occurrence in New England in the 1800s. Today the asymmetrical roofline reveals that history. The seven garden areas have perennial and annual flowers as well as vegetables and herbs. The home is decorated with fine art, antiques and memorabilia that reflects the innkeepers' interests in gardening, music and sailing. At Penury Hall, every effort is made to make guests feel at home. Guests may store food items in the fridge, wash clothes in the laundry room and play games or listen to music in the library. Retire in one of the three guest rooms, then awake to a gourmet breakfast that offers such courses as eggs Benedict, "Penurious Omelets" or cinnamon-raisin French toast. Then take out the inn's canoe to explore nearby lakes or else rent mountain bikes and carracks next door and head out for bike trails. Or, enjoy sauntering through the antique shops or the 14 local museums. End the day by relaxing in the sauna.
