Description

Circa 1767. It is easy to enjoy this historic inn and its 50 wooded acres with hiking trails, panoramic views and a half-mile of private oceanfront. One of the state's few remaining original coastal resorts, it is still family-owned, now by the fourth generation. Shore Oaks, the private summer home built in Arts and Crafts style, offers seaside accommodations. Relax on vintage furnishings by the weathered stone fireplace in the living room. Guest bedrooms are appointed with period antiques and fine linens. Savor a full breakfast in the dining room. Unwind on porch rockers overlooking the lighthouse and an island. One-to-five bedroom cottages are tucked among the trees or along the shore. Most offer living rooms with woodburning fireplaces and kitchens. The old homestead, the Oakland House, is an acclaimed onsite restaurant.

This property has been featured in Victorian Homes Magazine (Oct. 2006), Sunday Eagle-Tribune (September 25, 2005), Coastal Living (September, 2004), Newark Star Ledger (July, 2004), Boston Magazine's Elegant Wedding (Summer 2004), Maine Public Broadcasting's "Home; A Place Apart.", Yankee (April 2002), Yankee's Travel Guide to New England (2005), Metroland (August 2002).

Location: Country, Ocean Community, Waterfront, Lake and ocean.

Inkeepers Notes

I’m the fourth generation of my family to operate Oakland House Seaside Resort. My wife Sally, my daughter Sally McGuigan and her husband Sean McGuigan, and I greet guests much as my family has for more than 100 years. Some things have changed but some seem much as they have for many years. Today, guests are delighted with our blend of cosmopolitan sophistication and old-fashioned charm. Yankee Magazine has repeatedly selected us as “Best In Region.” The food is exceptional. Nightly fare (in season) includes a five-course dinner with a selection of entrees. Our menu changes daily as the freshest ingredients become available. Hike our 50 wooded areas, wander along our lake and ocean beaches, stroll along our extensive gardens, or simply watch the seagulls. Whether it's for a week-long vacation, a company retreat, a wedding, family reunion or weekend getaway, you can stay in a room at Shore Oaks Seaside Inn or one of 15 family-sized cottages. Dinner and breakfast, brunch on Sunday and a lobster picnic on Thursday night are included (MAP) throughout the summer. In the spring and fall there are great values to be had when cottages are available without meals with self-serve housekeeping and wood service. This is a happy destination for repeat guests who come back every year. It’s a great meeting place for families who convene here from all parts of the world.
