Description
Circa 1906. Visitors to Maine's capitol city have the option of staying at this nearby inn, a peaceful farm setting adjacent to an 800-acre state wildlife management area that is available for canoeing, fishing, hiking and hunting. This Victorian Shingle-style inn was once a stagecoach stop and dairy farm. Some rooms include large double whirlpool tubs and fireplaces. The inn, with its 130-acre grounds and new Gathering Place Hall, easily accommodates conferences, parties and receptions. Guests are welcome to visit the many farm animals. Historic Interest |
This late Victorian house is on land that was cleared and settled in the late 1700s. Once the home of William Oliver Vaughan, a member of one of the founding families in Hallowell. The present house was built in 1906 and served as a halfway stop for watering horses for a stagecoach line that ran between Hallowell and Emery's Grove on Cobbosseecontee Lake. Historic sites nearby: State capitol building, State museum, Archives and Fort Western (5 miles).
