Description
Circa 1874. There is a rich history behind this popularly photographed Second Empire Victorian mansion sitting on two acres of landscaped grounds with ocean vistas. It was built in 1874 by a sea captain and later owned by impressionist painter Waldo Peirce, a lifelong friend of Ernest Hemingway who visited the inn. Play the baby grand piano in the elegant parlor showcasing an original marble fireplace or watch a video by firelight in the nautical den. On the second floor a library/sitting area with bay views extends a peaceful spot to read or listen to a book selection on tape. Guest bedrooms with floor-to-ceiling windows are graciously furnished with 19th-century antiques and artifacts. Honeymooners enjoy the spacious Captain's Quarters with a hand-carved cherry canopy bed, marble-top dresser and bay window. A bountiful breakfast is served in the dining room.
This property has been featured in Bangor Metro magazine (Dec. 2005 issue), American Heritage magazine (July 2005 issue), HGTV "If Walls Could Talk " (June 2008). Location: Ocean Community. Inkeepers Notes
This authentic "Painted Lady" and genuine historic landmark has the distinction of being conveniently located on coastal Route 1, but gives you a rare treat of solace from street noise, as the Inn sits more than a acre back from Route 1. Surrounded by park-like grounds this stunning Victorian offers a glimpse into another era. Original pumkin pine floors, plaster ceiling medallions, marble fireplaces, and extraordinary wooodwork have all been preserved. Limiting our guests rooms to 3, we are able to offer our guests a more private and personal experience. The Inn is elegant, and at the same time inviting and comfortable. The resident beagle also does his part to add to the homey atmosphere. Searsport is a wonderful example of the quintessential Maine coastal town, and is also fortunate enough to be home to one of the countries best maritime museums - the Penobscot Marine Museum.
