Historic Interest

Inn Britannia is the original home built in 1830 by Captain William Butman, whose ancestral roots are traced back to Suffolk, England. The original Butman traveled from England to Salem, Massachuttes shortly after the arrival of the first pilgrims. Born in Searsport in 1802, Willam was the first Butman to become a sea captain and is thus the founder of a long line of mariners from Searport who earned the recognition as "Cape Horners" who sailed to the Orient. Butman family members are buried in the nearby Gordon Cemetery.

Historic Memberships: Smoke Free Property and National Trust.

Historic sites nearby: Penobscot Marine Museum, a streetscape of a dozen authentic 19th century buildings (1 mile). Fort Knox and Fort Pownal (less than 10 miles). Numerous lighthouses are within an hours drive. Castine village is less than an hours drive.
