Description

Circa 1872. A white iron archway welcomes guests to this three-story Victorian, once home to short story writer Ambrose Bierce. (Gregory Peck visited the house and starred as Bierce in the movie Old Gringo.) Guest rooms offer high ceilings, antiques, fine linens, fresh flowers and high beds. Rooms offer special features such as Jacuzzi tubs, a fireplace and canopy beds. Enjoy evening wine or early morning coffee from the balcony while admiring the massive redwood providing the shade, or listen to the classical music that plays softly in the parlor. At breakfast, expect entrees such as eggs Benedict or Belgian waffles as well as freshly baked croissants. Champagne is offered each morning. John is a hobby winemaker (200 cases a year) and Lisa is famous for her award-winning landscaping and flowerbeds. Galleries, shops and restaurants are a stroll away in historic downtown.

This property has been featured in Follow the Reader (The San Francico Chronicle).

Location: Charming small historic town.

Inkeepers Notes

Formerly the home of the witty and cynical author Ambrose Bierce ... now, the owners John and Lisa Runnells offer a gracious blend of luxury, history and warm hospitality under a roof of 1872 Victorian elegance. The fine linens and elegant antiques offer old-fashioned charm combined with the modern day conveniences we have all come to appreciate. The full gourmet breakfasts here are known throughout the valley: eggs Benedict, Belgian waffles, home-baked breads, fresh fruits, our own blend of coffee, teas, juice and champagne (of course)! While sipping premium wines you are welcome to watch the world go by as you sit on the covered balcony tucked high next to a huge redwood tree. (It feels like you are in your own treehouse.) Each beautiful guest room is as inviting as the next ... all with private baths and all of your comforts in mind. Walk to charming St. Helena for unique shopping and unequaled fine and casual dining. Off-season midweek rates available.
