Innkeeper Note

Applewood Inn & Restaurant is owned by Carlos Pippa and Sylvia Ranyak, since November 2009. Carlos is the quintessential entrepreneur, working for someone else only 9 months of his life. Born in Ecuador to an Italian father and a French mother, Carlos has created and sold several business’, including an import company which allowed he and Sylvia, whose parents both hail from Calabria in Italy, to frequently travel to Europe in search of gourmet food products like Chocolate, olive oil and truffles. Carlos and Sylvia both list traveling as one of their joys along with motorcycles, meeting people, food and wine. A recent 7 month adventure was a drive from their home in Texas to Rio de Janeiro. Sylvia also has a talent for and interest in design, working for a company which designed department stores and malls. She has also done interior design for private residences. It was precisely the love of all of the above that brought Carlos and Sylvia to Sonoma County with its incredibly rich food and wine culture and history. Applewood Inn stole their hearts and imaginations at first glance. Carlos tells us that scenes from “Under the Tuscan Sun” immediately flashed before his eyes when he first entered the inn’s lovely Mediterranean inspired courtyard. In September of 1985, when former owners Jimmy and Darryl moved up to the Russian River valley from San Francisco, Applewood (then called The Estate) was a vacant, newly renovated, ten room inn housed in the historic Belden family home. They immediately began to build the business and create the dream that Applewood Inn is today, adding the Piccola Casa in 1994 and the new restaurant building and Gate House in 1999. What began as relaxed, almost family-style dining with Jim and Darryl in the kitchen has evolved into one of the Wine Country’s premier dining destinations garnering rave reviews and loyal patrons along the way, their mailing list now includes almost 10,000 contacts. This year the Italian and French influenced California cuisine in Applewood’s restaurant was awarded a 27 in the highly respected Zagat Guide , with only Cyrus in Healdsburg receiving a higher rating. The restaurant has received the 2009 Diner’s Choice award on the popular Open Table reservation site and is consistently ranked among the best by Michelin, Fodor and Frommer Guides. Carlos and Sylvia don’t plan to change a good thing but want to augment what is already in place by offering rustic Tuscan lunches several days a week and naming the guest rooms after quaint Chianti towns, Tuscan Provinces and Renaissance artists like Michelangelo and Botticelli. Plans are also in mind for expanding the spa services that the inn offers its guests and to make Applewood “Greener” with solar and/or wind powered electricity. Email newsletters will keep everyone informed as to what’s happening and those who can’t wait can follow the progress at www.applewoodinn.com and www.dineatapplewood.com. One last note regards Sylvia’s lovely daughter, Crystal, who will be joining Carlos and her mother at the inn part of each year. Crystal has Rett Syndrome, a neurological development disorder that occurs almost exclusively in girls, affecting one in every 10,000 to 15,000 births. Carlos and Sylvia are intimately involved in the Rett Syndrome Foundation and will be donating part of their time and money to help cure this devastating disease.
