Anchorage was incorporated on November 23,1920. Alaska attained statehood in 1959. Anchorage boasts some 259 miles of maintained trails, several golf courses to enjoy during long summer nights, and is just 35 miles from the Alyeska Ski Resort in Girdwood. You can see six different mountain ranges from Anchorage. Mount McKinley, at 20,320 feet is the tallest mountain in North America and can be seen on clear days. Anchorage is Alaska's largest city with a population of just over 290,000 people, and 41 percent of the state's population. In fact, one of its most popular attraction is horseback riding along scenic trails and witness almost unexploited Alaskan wildlife just outside Anchorage. To do this, go to Horse Trekking Alaska, only seven miles away from the city. Learn about the history and heritage of native Alaskans by visiting the Alaska Native Heritage Center, which is five miles within vicinity of Anchorage.
