We recently stayed at The Ambrose Bierce House for a couple of nights and enjoyed it very much. The location is outstanding as are the breakfast and John's suggestions on what winery's to visit and where to dine after he asked us a few relevant questions. Our room was very comfortable and it was a pleasure to walk to dinner in the quaint town. When we return we will certainly contact John and Lisa and perhaps stay at their other property. Thank you for a wonderful experience, John and Gina

This place is great

This is a great place — location, food, innkeepers, and proximity to all things wine. We walked to some fine restaurants in St. Helena and enjoyed the other guests enormously. John and Lisa are very fine hosts and their breakfasts are stellar. I’m going back soon.

Perfect Location Fantastic Lodging

Perfect Location / Fantastic Lodging!!” Reviewed October 27, 2011 NEW My wife and I just stayed at the Ambrose Bierce House, and absolutely loved our stay and will be coming back soon!! The house location is just a mere block from downtown St. Helena, and walking distance to great restaurants and stores. We met John on our first morning, greeted with an Amazing Breakfast, meeting the other couples staying and had a great conversation over breakfast, everyone sharing there plans for the day and dining. John was so accommodating, helping those find wineries, shops, and helping with reservations. The next two mornings we had two more gourmet style breakfasts, served by Chris, John & Lisa's right handman. Chris was great, breakfast was amazing and again he was so helpful in helping fill in the day and reservations for the evening. The house was such a charming older home, with all that one would expect from a vintage home, feeling like had entered into a brand new home at the turn of the century. The rooms were impecably clean and everything was spotless. Each morning at 9am breakfast is ready, and each night there was wine and cheese. And after a day of wine tasting and great dinning, if you still need a night cap, they even had a bottle with Port and glasses for a late nighter..... It was our first stay at a Bed and Breakfast, and after our stay with John and Lisa, we will be staying again with them soon. We highly recommend !!

Perfect place for a romantic getaway

had stayed with John and Lisa before at their other property - Shady Oaks on Zinfandel Lane - and they are just as helpful and gregarious as I remembered. We stayed in the Ambrose Bierce Suite, which was very comfortable and roomy, with a nice sitting room, spa bath/shower and very comfortable bed. There's also a nice hot tub downstairs that we used twice. Downtown St. Helena (and great shopping and dining), as well as several wineries, including the iconic Berringer, are all within easy walking distance, and its only a short drive to literally dozens of household name wineries and dining. John and Lisa serve up a great breakfast daily, put out a nice wine and cheese spread each afternoon, and they are an endless source of information. Frankly, I can't imagine a visit to Napa Valley without involving them!

Amazing family stay for our wedding

My now-husband, our son and my immediate family stayed in this beautiful property for the night before/of/after our wedding in July, 2011. Everything was just perfect. The rooms were beautiful, the setting and location amazing and the hospitality perfect! The included breakfasts were UNBELIEVABLE and gourmet!! We loved our stay and would happily stay again.

Napa Valley Find

We had a great anniversary at the Ambrose Bierce House. It was in a perfect location in St. Helena. Carlos was a great innkeeper. He took care of all our dinner reservations and knew all there was to know about the wineries in the valley. Our breakfast each morning was wonderfull and the owner John served his own wine each evening.
