Circa 1854. In Newport's waterfront district stands this European-style inn. Designed by renowned architect Dudley Newton, the inn was named for Admiral Fitzroy who commanded the HMS Beagle on Charles Darwin's historic voyage that preceded the writing of his famous book. Fitzroy also was famous for developing a barometer. The inn has 17 attractive hand-painted rooms. A continental breakfast is served each morning in the breakfast room. Breakfast fare includes such delights as fresh fruit juices, yogurts, fresh muffins, croissants, cereals, cheese tray and hard-boiled eggs. After breakfast, guests will want to head out on foot to explore the historic waterfront district, which has excellent restaurants, antiquing and harbor activities. Newport boasts more occupied colonial houses than anywhere else in America. It also has the oldest Episcopal church and the first synagogue.
