Romantic Interest
Everything about the Inn lends itself to romance. As you approach the mansion, you'll understand the magnificence of the structure and the beauty of the grounds. The mirrors, the light fixtures, the rich warm colors, the fabrics and Schumacher papers on the walls. Fireplaces and clawfoot tubs and beautiful furnishings, wonderful linens and natural amenities. All the rooms are very private. Porch swing on the upper porch overlooks the pool and fountains and grounds. The updated baths have just been completely renovated but in a style befitting the era. Egyptian cotton towels, wonderful robes and feather beds are all of exceptional quality. The lighting and personal touches all contribute to the romance.
Historic Interest
Built in 1850, the mansion still remains very much intact with the orginal 12-foot Peir mirrors in dining room and parlor. There is a brick-lined tunnel that goes from the basement out to the rear tunnel as the home cooperated with the underground railroad. Rear Admiral Bicknell lived here. His claim to fame was overseeing the transition from wooden to steel ships. He put a speaking tube system all through the house that used to be in an old navy ship. Most of the original gas lights are here. The original pump to the well is in the summer kitchen and still functions. The walls of the mansion are 18-inch-thick brick and the basement walls and floors are lined with half-inch glass. The mansion was one of the first homes in America to be built with a central heat and air system.
