Added Value to 25th Anniversary

Dear Warren & Lia, Opening up of your home to us has added value to our 25th Wedding Anniversary. It meant a lot that y'all made arrangements for our late arrival and even left an Acorn for us! (A first in our travels) Your Home was truly a "Retreat" from the hustle of the city and a comfort for our sore feet. Kelli really enjoyed the feel and layout of our room, curb appeal and location. While I have been to NYC many times in the last 50 years, this was Kelli's first trip. 1871 was a great first taste of the big apple. May our family paths cross again and may our children grow to be mighty. (Psalm 112:1-2Kyx)

“Favorite

The 1871 House is my favorite "hotel" in New York. I put hotel in quotes because it's not a hotel really. It's a cozy B&B and it feels like you're staying in an elegant 19th century townhouse. And that's because you are! It's just a wonderful find. It has an authentic "classic New York" feel. At times I like a big modern hotel but this is 180-degrees opposite from that and a wonderful alternative. It's comfortable, spacious and furnished with beautiful antiques and high quality linens. The ceilings are super high and the beautiful old architectural details are still there. It's like staying at your rich friend's gorgeous house and soaking up every minute because you know you can't stay forever. I've been there a few times and the room I like to stay in, the Parlor Suite, and I'm sure the other front rooms, has enormous windows looking out on East 62nd Street and they open to let in fresh air and the wonderful cacophony of city noise. Although it's a B&B you don't have to make small talk with the hosts or anyone else. (For all I knew I was the only one there.) You are left alone (a big plus). It's very clean but doesn't smell like cleaning products, which is really great. There's no breakfast but who needs that with all the b'fast spots in the city. The 1871 House is in the best neighborhood in the city, the upper east side, a couple of blocks from Central Park. It's on a beautiful and quiet tree-lined streets and surrounded by beautiful multi-million dollar townhouses. It's also a great neighborhood to explore. I can't wait to go back. https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g60763-d118716-r441803102-1871_House-New_York_City_New_York.html#

My home away from home! Location is perfect & tree lined w/5 story UES brownstones- but just blocks

I lived around the corner a couple years back then moved to West Coast. This place is like coming back to my own little apartment every time. I've stayed in the basement room - which was spacious. Ceiling very low in the bathroom but doable. In the garden room (2) which was just awesomely quiet and serene (though no microwave or anything to heat up food) and the tiniest Euro bathroom - but it did the trick. I've stayed in the front second floor room (library?) (1) which had everything I would need to live there year round - street noise aside. And I've stayed in the top floor 3bedroom apt. which was just perfect in my opinion, even with no elevator as I lived in 4 story walk up before. Note - my 70 year mother did the five flights of stairs a couple times daily - but if you are out of shape, you will be winded by the time you get to your front door. This place is exactly what living in a $3000 a month 700sq ft apt in UES NY feels like - only much more homie feeling and much more room here! Room Tip: If you can do the flights of stairs - go for the top full floor suite. Quiet, spacious, and full kitchen.

Perfect location!

This was a family/friend senior trip to celebrate high school graduation. The room arrangement of the full-floor library suite was perfect for us, as my husband and I took the front room, the kids took the rear room, and there was a small kitchenette and hallway connecting the two. Everyone had their own space, but we were still in a true connecting room situation. Yes, the house is an older structure, and the hot water may take a minute to reach your shower. The floors may creak, and the absence of central AC may be disturbing(though the surprise installation of the in-room units yesterday was perfect!) to some. However, we did not come to NYC to sit in a hotel room. We came for easy subway access, cool neighborhood location from which to venture out, and a safe home base. This apartment met all these requirements, and I would recommend the facilities without hesitation.

Wonderful stay at 1871 House

I had business in my hometown - Manhattan, and didn't want to stay in a hotel atmosphere. This beautiful, old brownstone was perfect! Charming, well appointed and decorated, in a fantastic neighborhood, within walking distance to almost everything, and it felt like a home. I opted for a room with a kitchenette too. I was lucky enough to be there when Snowstorm Jonas hit, so was snug inside, watching the snow fall, and the street outside turn white. I hadn't been home during a snow storm since 1982! Really magical and enchanting. Everyone was so very nice, friendly and helpful too. I will be back- and I can't wait!

Until Next Time...

We visit New York at least once a year, staying in different locations each time, until next time, that is. Now that we've found 1871House, we will never stay elsewhere. After booking our room, I reread some of the reviews. I found myself a little confused; there's such a difference between those that are negative and those that are positive. Eventually I found myself a bit apprehensive about our pending stay. That was wasted energy. I can only guess the negative reviews were written by travelers who did not take the time to familiarize themselves with the features of 1871House that make it different from a hotel, features that my husband and I found absolutely charming. Guests are asked to behave respectfully of their fellow guests, of the staff, and of the home. The home is old (the very name of the place might give that away...) and although it is updated with more modern conveniences, these updates do not come at the expense of the period feel to the home. This includes a somewhat narrow (by today's standards) winding staircase, creaking hardwood floors, high ceilings, and, as mentioned in other reviews, older plumbing (with an option on the shower to increase the flow volume so you do get ample pressure to take a refreshing shower). The decor is lovely. We particularly enjoyed the oriental rugs and the abundance of lamps in our room. The room, the home, was as elegant and serene. I cannot express how very delighted we were/are with this find. It will take some of the stress out of planning visits to New York since I'll never again ask, "Where should we stay?" Thank you, owners & staff, we appreciate your lovely home and look forward to returning.

So beautiful, wonderful, and comfortable! Thank you

This is definitely the place to stay when you are looking to experience the "New York Life" We stayed in the Rear Library and were totally blown away immediately upon entering the building and then again upon entering out room. We felt like it was the perfect way to begin and end our long days of touring while feeling connected to the city in a way that you can't get when you stay in a big boxy hotel. Everything was in walking distance, Central park is just 2 blocks away and the sub to go anywhere is just around the corner. We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay and will be booking there are in the future when we return!

Ideal for an Extended Stay in NYC

After staying at 1871 House for five nights in June 2013, (See TripAdvisor review entitled “Perfect for a First Visit to New York”), it was an easy decision to again choose it when coming to the city for an extended period. For 6 1/2 months, I thought of the Parlor Suite as my home. As a writer, I worked in my room during the day. Its high ceilings, large windows looking onto East 62nd street and charming decor made for a warm and positive environment. It was a delight to become part of the neighborhood. I joined a fitness club around the corner and frequented restaurants, stores and a dry cleaner located minutes away. The close proximity to Central Park was an added bonus. It was a wonderful place to walk every day, meet up with friends or simply appreciate the joys of being in nature. The many kindnesses of the owners and their office and housekeeping staff left a lasting impression on me. Throughout my entire stay each of them treated me with genuine caring and attentiveness and respected my privacy. Knowing that I needed to spend long hours in front of a computer, they made efforts to ensure that I was set up ergonomically. At Christmas, they provided me with a small tree for my room. And, it was always reassuring that if I required assistance – day or night – they were only a phone call away. My heartfelt thanks to everyone at 1871 House!

“A special place that always exceeds expectations”

I have just returned from another amazing stay at 1871 House. I continue to be impressed with every aspect of my experience here - from the location to the rooms to the staff and everything in between. This trip was another exceptional experience that made me feel like I had my own personal place on the Upper East Side. I tried a new room this time - the Madison Suite. It is the most recently upgraded room and it was extraordinary. Very spacious and comfortable. Well-outfitted and top notch, from the kitchen to the bathroom to the bed. I really felt detached from the hustle and bustle of NYC while still being in right in the middle of it. This room is slightly more updated than the more antiquated other rooms throughout the house - and the charm of this room is slightly more luxurious than some of the other rooms. That said, I like both - charm AND luxurious - and I wouldn't hesitate to book ANY room in this treasure of a "hotel." I would be remiss if I didn't mention the staff. On this trip, my primary interaction was with David. He was responsive, professional and a delight to deal with. The staff is not intrusive or over-bearing, but always there to respond or answer questions. I also had the pleasure of running into Lia and Warren on this trip, my first interaction with the owners. They were so pleasant and grateful for my patronage. Could not have been more delightful. I was thrilled to finally meet them and thank them for welcoming me into their home. I have said this before - but this place really feels like a home-away-from-home for me. With frequent trips to NYC, it's nice to have a special place that provides a very different city experience. I highly, highly, highly recommend this place to anyone looking for something very unique and special in the Big Apple. Room Tip: All rooms have charm - and very different charm. I have stayed in almost all of them and every one...

Love the Mission Studio

We stayed in the newly renovated Mission Studio last summer. True, the steps down are very steep, but once you arrive you find yourself in a beautiful, quiet, and very private retreat. I'd had doubts about being in the basement, but on the hottest night of the summer we really appreciated the cool stone floors. The only drawback to this hotel, for me, is the minimum 3-night stay requirement--but that wouldn't be a problem for most tourists. Very highly recommended.

I Feel New Yorkey

I lived in New York for several years, and perhaps my favorite thing about the 1871 House was that it felt less like staying in a cold and touristy hotel, and more like I was using a friend's really fabulous apartment. I haven't felt so much like a New Yorker since I moved away.
